Description
Great Shiplock Park is one of the several locations in the James River Park System. This park is located along the Kanawha Canal in Richmond, Virginia. The Kanawha Canal is a historic canal that was built in the 1850s. It was built to connect Richmond Dock and the James River, passing miles of falls. At one point the canal was a major transportation hub for the tobacco ware houses on Dock Street, in Richmond, Virginia. This portion of the Kanawha Canal was abandoned after the Civil War. Years passed before the canal was restored.
Great Shiplock Park is a great location to hike, fish; and it is the trailhead for the Virginia Capital Trail.
On this serene October evening there are traces of fall foliage, bare trees and fallen leaves in the Kanawha Canal.
